almost every internet user uses search engines
to find information on the web. Studies also
reveal that most people only look at the first 2
result pages (first 20 listings) & most searches are 'general searches'
(a
general web search is when the consumer searches
for a particular type of product or
service). This means in order for
your website to be effective as an internet
advertising tool your website needs to be listed
on page one or two of
the results pages when people use a general web
search. If it is not, the chances of your
website attracting visitors is greatly reduced.
Just because a website is
listed on page one when searched for by name is
not an indication it's receiving a top listing
because a website should be
displayed on page one via a name search. The
true test is if the website is listed in the top
20 when a general search is used. Below

between the two searches.
Being listed via a
name search
is useful for people that
already know the business exists and they want
contact information or they want to check the
products or services lists for updates etc..
Being listed via a
general search
is
necessary if you want to use a website to
attract new customers. In order for
people that don't know a business exists or
don't know much about the company, for them to
find the website, the website must be included
in the search results query when they search for
the products or services this company provides,
which is a general search. Below is an example
of a general web search & why it is important to
be listed via a general search.

Let say you have a lawn
mowing/yard maintenance business that services
Lancaster and an informative website describing
your services. Mr. Smith who lives in Lancaster
would like to have someone start maintaining his
yard for him but he has no idea who to contact.
So he goes to Google and uses a general
search phrase like 'yard maintenance
Lancaster PA' to see what yard maintenance
website are available. Since Google lists well
over 50,000 results (listings) for this
particular phrase, if your website is
not properly search engine optimized (SEO) the
chances of your website being listed on Page one
or two where Mr. Smith will be able to see your
listing is very slim. Keep in mind that you are
not the only website owner that wants a top 20
listing for his/her website.
Every other business
owner with a website is also vying
for a top 20 listing. With so much
search engine competition you need a website

optimization so you can achieve the best
possible listing for your website. (Search
